A Definition of Motivation

Motivation is essentially about commitment to doing something.  In the context of a business, motivation can be said to be about ‘the will to work’. Before you hit the road to consider motivational posters for your office interior designor wall art read on.

According to the Oxford dictionary, motivation is ‘A reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way’. The word is said to originate in the late 19th century: from motive, reinforced by motivate.

As leaders, makers, doers movers and shakers, we all need to remind ourselves that motivation is an important part of life.  As Zig Ziglar once put it

“Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.”

Motivation can come from the enjoyment of the work itself and/or from the desire to achieve certain goals e.g. earn more money or achieve promotion.

It can also come from the sense of satisfaction that we gain from completing something, or achieving a successful outcome after a difficult project or problem solved.

Why does motivation matter in business?  Why do we use motivational posters and wall art at work? In short, people’s behaviour is determined by what motivates them, what inspires them.

The performance of employee is a product of both their abilities (e.g. skills & experience) and motivation.  Often an inspirational quote or guidance can have a profound effect on your team. A talented employee who feels de-motivated is unlikely to perform well at work, whereas a motivated employee can often deliver far more than is expected from them!
